Madden NFL 21: New Modes and Mechanics Revealed

A has revealed some of the new modes and mechanics coming in Madden 21, as well as screenshots, and its cover art featuring Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Madden 21 will see the return of last year's Face of the Franchise mode, now subtitled Rise to Fame. Pitched as a "documentary career campaign", Face of the Franchise: Rise to Fame will let players create a high school quarterback and play through their rise through the footballing ranks, taking in high school, college, NFL Combine, NFL Draft and the league itself. Out of the high school section, you can choose to pivot to running back or wide receiver.

Per a press release, the game will also feature the following mechanical additions:

"Improved ball-carrier mechanics for all out control in the running back and receiver positions."
"Enhanced D-Line mechanics that add new control to make the pass rush positions more responsive, and fun to play."
"Realistic Open-Field Tackling allows for clutch defensive stops."
    "New player-controlled celebrations."
"Outside of all the new control players will have in-game, some of the biggest changes will arrive in the overall authenticity and presentation with new on field camera shots and improved player awareness of their positioning and surroundings on the field"

Guess the number of times Franchise mode improvements are mentioned.

Without reading the article, I'm going to go out on a limb and say zero. Of course the video didn't show any gameplay from an actual gameplay camera.

That release looks like something from The Onion.

"All your pass rush moves and block-sheds for Madden NFL 21 will now be on the right analog stick."

Wow..you mean like where they were in NCAA Football 6 years ago? That's some serious progress they made this year.

Adaptive AI. Does anyone remember "Liquid AI?"  That Madden quote at the end.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/madden-nfl-98_/adblurbs (https://www.mobygames.com/game/madden-nfl-98_/adblurbs)

Madden NFL 98 Technology Advancements
Madden NFL 98 pushes interactive sports game technology to a new level. A key area of focus this year was devoted to the game's artificial intelligence (AI), which is the manner in which the computer reacts as the game is played. Pioneered by EA SPORTSä, Madden NFL 98 is the first video game to implement a concept called Liquid AI’. Just as a liquid, such as water, flows when it hits a surface to fill open space and gaps, Liquid AI enables the video football players in Madden NFL 98 to dynamically flow and move to the correct positions on the field in order to make a play. Other football games will give a player a pre-set responsibility for a play. In Madden NFL 98, however, a player will read a play as it develops, check what other players on his team and the opposing team are doing, and will react and change his assignment if necessary. The game reacts exactly as a human would.

"Madden NFL 98 plays smart. You've really got to pay attention to what you're doing to beat the game," said John Madden, Emmy Award winning broadcaster and former Super Bowl’ winning coach. "If you don't play smart like players do in the real game, you'll get run over by the computer. Then you'll wake up the next morning with a headache saying, 'What hit me? I was just playing a video game and now I can't get out of bed!'"

I still have this clip from madden 19 in disbelief Tiburon is still allowed to make video games.

I remember "liquid AI" very well. It was the same year Gameday 98 released a fully-poloygonal football game on the PS1 after EA said it was impossible to do.

I still remember reading a quote/review where someone said liquid AI was what was running down the legs of the Madden team when they saw Gameday 98.

It was one of the Gameday developers that made that comment, not a reviewer.

Welp sounds like we are probably just getting new fonts for franchise mode.

Play through a full NFL career and leave your legacy as a player, coach or owner with single-player and multiplayer online-connected leagues. Compete with up to 32 teams in your quest for a Super Bowl Dynasty. Complete each season with a bid to the annual Pro Bowl and earn Seasonal Awards.

Silver lining

QuoteYou can even swag your way to the endzone easier this year, with a single button press Celebration Run. But use cautiously, as the ball carriers tend to fumble frequently if tackled while celebrating!

No only is it pathetic that they think a celebration run is worth mentioning, but they had it in an earlier versions of Madden too. What a fucking joke.

What is new in classic franchise mode?
Quote
The new X-Factors make their way into Franchise. More details on X-Factors in Madden NFL 21 coming soon!
Franchise has an expanded Wild Card Playoff round to match the real-life NFL which now features 3 games for each conference instead of 2.
Updated all rookie contract amounts to be more authentic to the actual Draft rookie contracts for all 7 rounds
Retuned every position's available Abilities to better consider in-game effectiveness of the ability and archetype authenticity. Also made the 2nd ability unlock for most positions 85 OVR (was 80 OVR in Madden NFL 20.)
Fixed multiple cases in logic of players considered for a Dev Trait upgrade at the end of the season not checking the correct stat types.
Updates to all team back-end depth chart philosophies so they match the team's scheme.
Added position-specific Offensive Lineman archetype progression buckets for OT, OG, and C to capture variance in OVR formulas based on positional expectations. Previously, all OL were pulling from the same progression bucket.
Fixed issue where defensive playbooks and schemes for our fictional coaches would be misaligned (e.g. 3-4 playbook with a 4-3 scheme.)

They patched it!

It's been a long time since I got excited for that. I guess we have to wait and see what wonders next gen brings. This will be the first year I do not purchase a Madden game. I say it every year but this is the one. I can download Madden 20 if I get desperate.

I've been fine with with waiting for a $20 price the past few years with all my sports games. No sense buying a buggy game at full price when you can get it for 1/3 the price with most of the bugs fixed. I just made that mistake with the new Assetto Corsa even though it was only $40.

After #fixMaddenFranchise trended to #1 EA actually had to respond to the community.  He did say, "The Franchise community is critically important to us."  Which did make for a good eye roll. Will see it when they deliver it. Till then. empty words to angry mob.

I can't even get through a quarter without getting bored with this year's game. I was able to notice a big difference in the look and feel between Madden 19 and 20, but I see almost no difference between 20 and 21. The game also has the same bug as last year's game where the on-field trainer would automatically turn itself on for Play Now games even though it's set to off. There also doesn't seem to be a way to disable the new lineman prompts on the screen when playing. Hard pass for me this year.

Charging full price for that is sheisty AF.

The game also had bad stuttering that was actually fixed in an update that came out this afternoon. I did end up playing a full game after the update and the stuttering was gone, but I also confirmed that there's no way to get rid of the "Rush Moves" icon on the screen and I doubt that's something they would patch in. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this. The display takes up so much of the screen and blocks a lot of the action on the line where you're actually playing.

For the first time I have avoided buying or even trying for free a Madden game. Still interested in seeing what the next gen versions looks like but I am not holding out hope from some miraculous turnaround.

Congrats and welcome to the club. I'm sure the next-gen version will look better, but I doubt it will play any better.

It still sells like hotcakes and they make a ton of money off of MUT. Little will change until people start voting with their purse strings.  Will all the videos of how badly an animation based system is for football, I would not be shocked to see them remove instant replay from next gen.

I enjoy the videos, this is new and hilarious.
