Really good video showing just how LA Noire is pulling off the amazing facial animations.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1145578p1.html (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1145578p1.html)

There's a Serial Killer Loose in L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire's hero, Cole Phelps, is a hot up-and-coming new recruit to the LAPD. As he solves cases, he is quickly promoted from the traffic desk, to robbery and eventually up to homicide. And now we know that tied throughout all of this is the machinations of a serial killer and the severe corruption within the police department.

The latest trailer shows events from Phelps' time on the Homicide desk. "The more successful Phelps becomes as a detective, the more dangerous the world around him becomes," says Head of Team Bondi (http://games.ign.com/objects/760/760493.html), Brendan McNamara, adding, "Including inside the LAPD."

Though we now have a look at the serial killer, McNamara cautions that "The story of LA Noire (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/760/760495.html) goes beyond simply catching one killer. There is a much larger story that will reveal itself as you move from desk to desk that deals with the corruption at the heart of Los Angeles in 1947."

From PAX

During a closed-door PAX East demonstration for members of the press, Rockstar showed off the majority of one homicide case entitled, The Red Lipstick Murder. Along with playing through almost the entirety of one of the game’s 23 main “assigned cases”, a rep for Rockstar revealed that it will take roughly 25-30 hours to complete the main story. On top of the main story, there are “unassigned cases” that help build the backstory of secondary characters. These side stories will freeze the main story until they are completed. Additionally, the game will support DLC cases, some of which have already been announced as pre-order exclusives to retailers â€" all of which will eventually be made available to everyone via the PlayStation Store.

Anyone else picking this one up? I am teetering on buying it but agitated by all the exclusive DLC that should be on everyones disc from the get go. DLC should be content created after the game is released. Man I really hate this kind of thing.

I am going to be back in Lubbock for a few days and will be doing my annual spring cleaning of games. (a fond farewell to NCAA 11, NCAA BB, NHL 11 and Fifa 11).

I may Gamefly it...but it would be queued up behind Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2 in the huge Single Player Games I Need To Start Much Less Finish line.I also need to finish RDR and God of War 3 and maybe start Uncharted 2. :))

L.A.s' inevitable descent into the bargain bin in 6 months also gives me pause.

If it's like RDR in LA, I might pick it up after it's on sale.

Not exactly like RDR but there is some action. More of a open world crime solving game.

I have to say something nice about Gamestop, they gave me $79.00 for the 4 games I listed above (since it went toward LA Noire I got 25% added to each trade). Unfortuantely that would have left me with a credit so I went ahead and picked up MX/ATV Alive (sigh, which means I will end up buying DLC for it).

Brad,

As much time as you spend with COD, I have no clue how you find the time to start any game.  I have to pat myself on the back for beating both RDR and the Undead game. Last non-sports game I have completed since Soldier of Fortune on the PS2.  :))

3 Big ol discs to install when I get back.  Assuming you can do that with this game.

Yeah,if I could use the SPAS-12 w/suppressor to solve crimes in L.A. I might be more jazzed. :))

Brent, let me know what you think of it. The graphics look amazing, but I've heard there are some graphical issues with the Xbox 360 version.

Yea I read that in the reviews. It is a port from the PS3 so it is to be expected.  Will play it on Friday when I get back.

I did find this from a review, which is good since I plan to install all three discs.

With L.A. Noire coming out on the Xbox 360, expect some graphical glitches and hiccups but it can lessen via the data installation. For those who are looking for a smooth experience on the Xbox 360 version of L.A. Noire, installing the game’s data is the way to go. Installing all three discs will take up to 20GB of space as each of the discs are at 6.6GB. Following the successful data installation, players can notice that the game loads faster, lessen the in-game graphics pop-up and the screen tearing.

I go home tomorrow so I get to play LA Noire sooner than expected.

Now to the funny thing about my purchase yesterday. MX/ATV Alive is going back unopened to GS.  I just read that it will be July before we see any motocross tracks, there is no career mode in the game and they plan to sell DLC bikes @ $3 a pop. I knew I should have stayed away from it and the more reviews and videos I saw only made things worse.

I think I am done with the racing genre all together.  :-\

If you are referring to both tennis games, I can say hands down Top Spin 4.  I am installing VT4 right now but I have seen enough videos to know which game I prefer.  That said one reason I get the VT games is that I can play at that net more, and play serve and volley.  Hard to do that in Top Spin and I prefer playing baseline to the net but it is nice to have a little change in gameplay.

Hope that is what you were asking for.

Jason,

PM me your address, your Christmas gift comes early.  The only redeeming part of VT4 is the cameras and we had those last year. Of course they added some flair to the cameras, including a matrix style shot on a solid hit which can and should be turned off in the camera settings.  Playing as much Top Spin as I have it is impossible to get used to starting the swing before it is returned and letting go on the bounce.  It took me forever just to win one match on Normal level. Some have called it unresponsive but it really boils down to waiting to hit the button AFTER it has been returned. The graphics seem to have gone downhill each year and this is no exception. They did add what appears to be a bukkake shot at the end of long rallies, where they attempt to show players sweat but it looks more like an adult film you would find in Japan.

The bright side if that you do not dive like crazy, although you will dive on occasion.  The problem now is hitting big ol flop shots back at the opponent due to bad timing or playing too much of another tennis game which is actually good.

I think Top Spin 4 will keep me happy until Top Spin 5.

If anyone reading this is not sure what bukkake is, do yourself a favor and DON'T google it. If you're a regular listener of Howard Stern though, you'll be more than familiar with it.

If you have been on the internet for more than a year there is a good chance you have heard of it.  Seriously though it really does look like the players are covered like a glazed doughnut.  They really need to work on that technology.

So Jason do you want the game?  If not Brad is interested.  It is free, you just will owe me a favor worth the price of shipping it.

by the way I just had to search and I was not alone when it came to the sweat.

http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2011/05/06/is-the-world-ready-for-virtua-tennis-4s-sweat-technology/ (http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2011/05/06/is-the-world-ready-for-virtua-tennis-4s-sweat-technology/)

And all of these are preferable to the first thing I thought when I saw these white droplets spattered on my tennis player’s face. I think it’s best if I just leave that to your imagination rather than actually write the Japanese term, partly because I can never remember how many K’s are in that word.

Virtua Tennis 4 is out next week and aside from the really gross sweat technology, I’m pretty well won over.

http://www.cheatcc.com/xbox360/rev/virtuatennis4review2.html (http://www.cheatcc.com/xbox360/rev/virtuatennis4review2.html)

Visually, the biggest head-scratcher is the facial sweat. While good body sweat shows with drenched clothing clinging to the body, the obscenely large, whiteâ€"yeah, whiteâ€"beads of sweat on the characters' faces give the appearance that their skin is melting away.

I always heard that is was good for her skin, at least that is the line I always used.  ;) ;)

Okay no more bukkake and no more Virtua Tennis talk.   Back to semen free LA Noire.

After an hour or so I have solved 5 of the 21 cases.  I am really liking it so far and enjoy how you utilize the clues found into the interrogation. I have screwed up a few time in the interrogation (you have the choices of truth, doubt and lie) and the last two can be hard to distinguish between. I tend to call everyone a liar and that has hurt my score a bit.   ;)   The driving in the game is interesting because you do not have a point to point guide to go between places and you have to use your partner to tell you when to turn or bring up the large map.  Shooting has been limited so far but is similar to RDR.  Mostly chase scenes on foot early on.

You can really bump up the difficulty in finding clues by removing the rumble (which comes on when you are near a clue) and there is music that plays during the search for clues that stops when you have found all clues.  I have turned the rumble off for my next mission to add some difficulty but leaving the music on as you really need a guide as to when you have all the clues.

So far no real complaints.

And all the cases are solved, final verdict.  C+

I just hate these open world games that are linear. I would have enjoyed the game more if I had some time to play around in the city. Without that ability it just became a case of passing on driving and letting my partner take the wheel so we could fast forward to the next location. It was like Mafia 2.  I wanted to play in the sandbox but there was no sand and only a note that said where to go next.

Oh boy a side mission.  Suspect runs and takes a hostage, you shoot and kill them.  So many repetitive areas in this game.

Ending...  Not what I expected but not very good either. The twists in the game for the main character were really against the grain and hard to accept based on everything you know about him. Also for a game based on interrogation the last part of the game is spent, driving and shooting.

Glad it is all over because I really did not enjoy my experience. Most of the game had me remembering how much fun RDR was and when the next RDR or GTA was coming out.

Most people seem to be clearing it quickly.  Of course I was not looking for the bonus stuff, movie reels and landmarks as they felt tacked on just to get you to explore the city.

I will just toss it in with VT4 and let you experience it for yourself.  I am in the boonies and trading games is a PITA.

I guess it's got no replay value? That's one of the great things about RDR, I played the game a bunch even after completing it and that's not including the DLC available for it.
Title: Re: L.A. Noire Thread
Post by: BDSooner72 on May 22, 2011 @ 07:16:08 PM
Not unless you just want o play each case again and try for a better score/see more scenarios unfold within a case.  In some cases I completed the case without having to go to all the places available.

Each case is ranked on clues found, amount of correct questions and damage caused while driving through the city.

Not worth it for me.  I am really looking forward to another REAL open world game.

Been enjoying this game, but it's definitely on rails.

Here's a great review most may have missed;http://killscreendaily.com/articles/reviews/review-l-noire (http://killscreendaily.com/articles/reviews/review-l-noire)

The best quote; "As I ambled exhaustedly along, I decided that L.A. Noire is not a detective story at all. It is a parable about death and purgatory, a story of forgiveness. A man named Phelps went to war. He had his share of flaws, and in the midst of battle he made some bad decisions. Those decisions had repercussions that no one could have anticipated. Some of them were terrible, but then, war is terrible.

Phelps died at Okinawa, and his soul became lost. He couldn't move on until he found his own justice, acted out his part in a morality play born of his own cowardice and insecurity. So now he wanders a half-remembered vision of his home city, playing detective, solving cases over which he has no real control.

Cole Phelps is not looking for criminals; he is looking for absolution. He must make peace with his failings before he can finally let them go, and this gauzy straitjacket of a city will not let him rest until he has done so. L.A. Noire asks not for players’ help or guidance in this matter; it asks only if they would like to tag along."

I had no idea Dennis Miller did game reviews, minus all the funny bits. After reading the first paragraph of his "Stacking" review on that very site my head felt like it wanted to explode.  If the New Yorker started publishing video game reviews, this guy has a job for life.

I prefer my game reviews by British guys speaking so fast that I need cartoon visuals to keep up and therefore the review is supplied in video form.

There are spoilers in this review but it really does nail down my thoughts on the game.

I still like the idea that the game is like The Sixth Sense and Phelps is actually dead the whole time.

As far as VT4,the unearthly grunts and shrieks of the female players and their seminal sheen is too much.
Otherwise, it seems the gameplay is exactly as I remember it on Dreamcast.
